Through research i have discovered that there are 3 main categories of music video.
Illustration - the video reflects the lyrics of the song. Could use just a video of the band performing the song - like The Vaccines 'if you wanna' video that i put a link up for in my previous post.
Amplification - Adds extra meanings to the songs that aren't in the lyrics themselves. The 'Bigger Than Us' video by White Lies displays this with demonstating a boys love for a chocolate bar, which turns out to be a girl trapped inside the giant chocolate bar. the 'bigger than us' reference comes from the name of the chocolate bar, because the bar is, literally bigger than a human.
Disjuncture - where the images on the video have no connection to the lyrics. It can be seen as a short film with the song as the soundtrack. 'There Goes The Fear' by Doves fits into this category.
